The practice of meditation has spread throughout the world with unparalleled success. Born within millennia of Eastern traditions, meditation reminds us of the essence of humanity within itself, the art of being.
It is an essential practice for today's world, where the pace of Western life is overtaking the natural biorhythms of the human being. It is a practice that brings us into the present moment, freeing us from tension and promoting a sense of well-being.
In this space we address some questions about meditation, such as its etymological origin, its definition, its benefits and how to benefit from it.
Namasté
The genealogy of the word meditation in the Western world comes from the Old Testament Hebrew "Haga" - meaning "murmuring, or meditation" the Bible was then translated into Greek, in which "Haga" became "melete" and then into Latin, in which it became "meditation". Here the meaning refers to acts of contemplation, concentration of attention and prayer.
However, the term has also been introduced as a translation for Eastern spiritual practices, referred to as Dhyana in Buddhism and Hinduism, from the Sanskrit root "Dhya" meaning contemplation or meditation. In the "eight limbs of Patanjali", dhyana is the stage before the ultimate consciousness, which is Samadhi (liberation of the soul).
Definitions of meditation
Because of the variety of meditation practices, there is a range of definitions, which do not always incorporate all the elements that constitute the essence of the word. Here are some of them:
"The act of reflecting, thinking deeply about a subject, about achieving something."
"A set of techniques to promote a heightened state of awareness and focused attention. "
"Technique for modifying consciousness."
"Meditation is a practice by which an individual operates or trains the mind or induces a mode of consciousness so that the mind recognizes its content without being identified with that content, in order to promote relaxation, develop vital energy, and develop compassion, love, patience, generosity, and forgiveness."
